May Update

♦ Be sure to check our list of new books and DVDs and those that are currently "on order". You'll find the list on the right side of this blog, just scroll down a bit. :-) You are encouraged to place a hold on items that are "on order" to ensure that you get a chance to read a title before it goes out to fill holds in other regions.

♦ Palliser Regional Library now has a number of Book Club Kits available. Each kit contains 10 copies of the book, plus discussion questions, and can be borrowed for a period of 6 weeks. CLICK HERE for more information about the Book Club Kits and a list of titles currently available.

♦ Each month we have a list of new and hot titles available. The list is both in bookmark format and as a wall display in the library. Be sure to have a look!

♦ Three more library regions will be joining SILS -- the new province-wide system -- on June 7: Lakeland Region, Parkland Region, and Wapiti Region.

♦ We are looking for two summer students to lead our Summer Reading Club for kids. Students need to be at least 15 years of age, and will be hired to work one afternoon per week, for six weeks. For more details, please see posters at the school and around town, or call the library.

♦ Our Summer Reading Club theme this year is "Destination Jungle". We will start taking registrations once school is out, and will start our weekly programs on Wednesday, July 7th.

♦ We recently rearranged our adult fiction collection to create a special Christian Fiction section. Hopefully it will be easier for our readers to find their favorite Christian authors.

♦ Due to popular demand, we have added a new magazine subscription, Fons and Porter's Love of Quilting. We have another quilting magazine we have purchased locally, The Quilter Magazine.

New Province-Wide System

As of January 13, 2010, we are part of a new, province-wide system. We are issuing new library cards, which can be used at any public library in the province. (Note that not all regions are on the new system yet, but will be coming up in the future. Currently Palliser Region, Southeast Region, Saskatoon, and Regina are online.)

If you don't have your new card yet, you can stop by the library and we will update your record and issue you a new card. Let us know if you'd like to sign up for email notifications for overdues, holds, etc.

Bring in a non-perishable food item for the Community Christmas Hampers and have your fines forgiven, up to $5.00. (Fines only; charges for lost or damaged books, etc. are NOT included.)

Closures and Additional Open Days

Davidson Library will be CLOSED on the following dates:

• Wednesday, November 4 ~~ all staff will be attending training in Moose Jaw
• Wednesday, November 11 ~~ Remembrance Day

The Library will be OPEN two additional days in November:

• Monday, November 9 12:00 - 8:00 p.m.
• Monday, November 16 9:30 - 11:30 a.m 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.

STORYSACKS

Storysacks Information Session

• Do you like to sew?
• Are you crafty?
• Creative?
• Are you interested in promoting community literacy?

We are looking for volunteers to help make Storysacks. We will purchase all of the supplies, but we need help in creating the Storysacks.

What goes into a Storysack?

• A good quality storybook;
• Props, scenery and characters to bring the story to life;
• A non-fiction book book linked to the story;
• Reading tips and activity ideas for the parents;
• Word or number games based on the story; and
• An audio tape/CD of the story.

We will be holding an information and brainstorming session on Saturday, May 23 at 1:00 p.m. at the library. Please join us!

We are pleased to announce that we will be holding an author reading and writer's workshop with Saskatchewan author Rebecca Grambo on March 6 & 7!

Writer's Workshop:
"From Brain to Page"
Saturday, March 7, 2009
9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
at the Library
Lunch and refreshments provided. No cost.
Pre-registration required, adult level class.

"This beginning- to advanced-level creative writing class will give you lots of brainstorming ideas and help you find starting points for expressing your thoughts. Whether you write fiction, non-fiction, poetry or song lyrics, you'll enjoy and benefit from this workshop. We'll look at choosing words to tell your story and learning to describe objects, people, places and emotions. This class is a great starting point for beginning writers and a creative re-energizer for those who have been writing for awhile.

"Rebecca Grambo is the author of 26 non-fiction books for adults and children as well as innumerable magazine articles. She currently writes a regular column for Acreage Life. An accomplished speaker and teacher, Ms. Grambo provides entertaining and very accessible readings, talks, and workshops for audiences ranging from Grade 1 students to Seniors' groups." - Saskatchewan Writer's Guild
